Prerequisites, Recommended Gear
Prerequisites
- Skill or experience level: Any. This course is designed for anyone interested in learning flash photography for portraits.
- Camera: Any digital camera with a flash hot shoe and an “M” setting (to allow for manual adjustments to aperture, ISO and shutter speed). If the camera has TTL capability, it will be useful for sections dealing with TTL.
As you progress, you will need the following:
- Flash: Any working flash with an “M” setting (to allow for manual adjustments to flash power). This could be a speedlight-style (shoe-mount flash) or a larger studio or portable strobe.
- Flash Trigger: Flash controller/trigger and receivers. I recommend a set/system that is TTL-compatible with your camera. This will be useful for sections dealing with TTL.
- Other: The following will help you work through the examples and assignments:
- Light stand
- Modifiers: Umbrella, and/or softbox
- Flash mount with swivel
Many of the products used in the demonstrations are Godox brand. I have found that these products are generally reliable and affordable. I will provide links to products that will work, but any similar products should be fine.
