Is Photography Your Dream Job?

Many aspiring photographers say they want to earn an income from photography. It’s easy to see why. Beyond the allure of turning a passion into profit, there’s the promise of flexible hours, creative autonomy, and the joy of capturing moments that resonate with other people. And, in an economy where job security can be elusive, having control over one’s income source is empowering. Photography not only offers a chance to build a personal brand but also provides an avenue to connect, share stories, and leave a lasting impact.

The benefits of becoming a pro are clear (and again, people say with conviction that they want to get there), so why do so many people struggle to stay on track long enough to reach that goal?

Since most goals require some degree of motivation to achieve, let’s look at the motivations that might be driving some of us:

  • Concerns about job security
  • Wanting more control over personal income
  • Worried about savings for the later years
  • Unhappy with current job or path
  • Wanting more freedom, autonomy, control

Each of these reasons and concerns is legitimate.  Who wouldn’t want the benefits of increased income and autonomy?  Definitely strong motivators if you can relate.  And if these desires and concerns are top of mind, why wouldn’t someone take real action to address them?

Is it a lack of genuine desire? Or is it the looming shadow of potential failure? Maybe it’s a lack of self-belief, thinking that even with all the right steps, success might remain elusive.  Is overthinking the problem? Is it just laziness and a failure to acknowledge the unfolding reality to come if nothing changes?

Is Becoming a Professional Photographer Something You Really Want to Do?

Here are some things to consider:

  • Skillset: Is photography a skill you’d like to monetize? Note: Not having all the skills necessary isn’t the question; every photographer, beginner to advanced professional, should always be learning and improving.
  • Income: Would you enjoy being more in control of your income?  How would this benefit you and your family?  Your future?
  • Entrepreneurship: Do you see yourself enjoying the challenges of marketing and promoting your services?
  • Passion & Purpose: At the core, do you truly desire a professional career in photography? Or are you content with the status quo?

The Only Thing Holding You Back is… You

The power to change your future lies within you. If you’re someone who often doubts their ideas, it’s time to recognize this self-defeating behavior. Expose yourself to a reality that is more proactive and positive.  Try self-help books or motivational materials to shift your mindset. If you’re someone who starts with enthusiasm but soon reverts to old habits, acknowledge this pattern. And if the fear of failure holds you back, remember that every misstep is a stepping stone to success. Embrace the lessons from each setback and keep your eyes on the prize.

Charting Your Path Forward

  1. Self-Assessment:  Determine if you are going to be okay with the trajectory of your career, income, and potential for happiness into the next ten years. Will you be where you want to be if you follow the current path?  If not, you need to do something about it.
  2. Visualize Success: Imagine yourself as a thriving professional photographer. Relish the autonomy, the control over your income, and the pride of entrepreneurship. Yes, there will be challenges and mundane tasks, but weigh them against the rewards.
  3. Commitment: Make a firm commitment to your vision. Set clear, tangible goals and timelines. A vague goal is merely a wish. To transform it into reality, you need dedication, daily effort, and unwavering enthusiasm.
  4. Plan of Action:  Find out exactly what steps to take to achieve your goal of becoming a professional photographer.  Achieving a goal requires a good plan of action.  Steps and tasks taken individually are pretty easy to accomplish.  These steps can lead to the predetermined milestones necessary to ultimately achieve your main goal.  If you know the steps to take to achieve the goal, taking those steps will get you there.

Starting your journey towards becoming a professional photographer is simple. Decide if you’re ready for a change. If you are, commit wholeheartedly. Equip yourself with the knowledge and tools to achieve your dream. And then, step by step, make it a reality. You can take that first step now.
