Double Side Lighting for Dramatic Portraits

In this latest video, I discuss a lighting technique that’s both simple and powerful—double side lighting. If you’re looking to emphasize your subject’s form and physique in a unique way, this method is worth a try. Unlike traditional split lighting, where one side of the subject is left in shadow, double side lighting uses two lights, one on either side, creating a distinct shadow line down the middle. This effect can really sculpt your subject’s features, making it perfect for fitness shots, bodybuilders, or any portrait where you want to highlight strong contours.

We’ll look at setups using bare strobes, umbrella modifiers, and strip softboxes, showing how each option can create great results. This technique isn’t just about getting the lighting right—it’s about experimenting and having fun with your photography. I encourage you to give it a try, whether you’re using bare flashes or softboxes, and see how it can transform your portraits.
