Speedlights vs. Strobes: Choosing the Right Flash for Your Portrait Photography

Speedlights (shoe-mount flash units) or Strobes (larger units not meant to be used “on-camera”) for portrait photography? Each has its own perks and drawbacks. Some things to consider:

Note: For no specific reason, I’ll use the term, “speedlight” to refer to shoe-mount flash units. Speedlight is what Canon calls its flash units.

SPEEDLIGHTS (SPEEDLITES):

🔸 Weight and Portability: Speedlights are lightweight and compact, making them perfect for on-the-go shoots. They easily fit into your camera bag, and you can carry several without feeling burdened.

🔸 Power: While they may not pack the same punch as strobes, speedlights are often sufficient for most indoor and even some outdoor portraits. If you’re shooting in broad daylight, you might need to bump up the power a bit or get creative with positioning and modifiers.

🔸 Cost: Speedlights are generally more budget-friendly. If you’re just starting out or working within a tight budget, they’re a great option.

🔸 Recycle Time: Though speedlights typically have slower recycle times compared to strobes, I don’t mind since I take my time between shots.

STROBES:

🔸 Weight and Portability: Strobes are heavier and bulkier, which can be a hassle if you’re constantly on the move. They often require separate power packs or larger stands, adding to the setup time and effort.

🔸 Power: Strobes offer significantly more power, which can be crucial for overpowering sunlight during outdoor shoots or lighting larger scenes. If you need that extra oomph, strobes are the way to go.

🔸 Cost: Higher power and professional build quality come at a price. Strobes are generally more expensive, but they’re a worthwhile investment if you need that extra power and reliability.

🔸 Recycle Time: Strobes win here with faster recycle times, allowing for quick consecutive shots. This isn’t a big deal for me since I prefer a more deliberate shooting pace.

In my experience, speedlights often meet my needs. They’re easy to travel with and provide ample power for most situations. But, if you frequently shoot outdoors in daylight or need that extra bit of power, investing in a strobe might be worth considering.
