You’ll enjoy a series of lessons that will have you creating your first close-up & macro shots almost immediately. From there, you’ll continue to increase your knowledge and skills. Your images will become more impressive with each section. Most lessons are provided as short, easy-to-digest videos (approx. 5-10 min. ea.) along with text content and images. Below is a breakdown of the course.
Section #1

In our introductory section, we’ll discuss close-up & macro and how you can use what you’ll learn to not only create beautiful images but professional product and detail photos for everything from online sales to tutorials, to event photography. We’ll get right into things with some basic instruction on using three different techniques with your current lens. This will include your first optional project assignment. It’ll be fun!
Section #2

In this section, we’re going to cover ALL the close-up & macro gear; everything from diopters to extension tubes, to various lens devices. I’ll demo each one and show the results. We’ll evaluate what solutions work best for different types of projects. We’ll talk about what to avoid so that you can save money. This is big. There are so many affordable solutions that deliver amazing results. You’ll do your second project during this section, too.
Section #3

Here, we’ll cover many different lighting options and techniques. Natural light, on-camera flash, hand-held flash, macro flash units, off-camera flash on a stand, mini-softboxes, etc. We’ll also talk about depth-of-field and background lighting considerations. This might be the most fun section of the course. Except for the fact that the next two sections are really going to be cool! You can do your third project this section (optional as always).
Sections #4 and #5

Sections 4 & 5 each have 3 big projects that I’ll demo (6 total). You’ll learn all the specs, details, and techniques for each one. Follow along and do them with me. Then, change things up and make each one your own! Projects include special effects, product detail shots, food detail shots, flowers and nature, insects, abstract art. You’ll have the opportunity to turn in two project assignments.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to invest in new gear to take this course?
All you need is your camera and lens to start making good close-up & macro images. We’ll also cover very affordable options you can use to improve your photos. The goal is to empower you to do amazing close-up & macro images with minimal gear and expense. Your budget doesn’t have to be a limiting factor.
What type of camera and lens do I need to take this course?
I recommend a DSLR or mirrorless digital camera with an interchangeable lens. Almost any lens you’re currently using should work, including a kit lens (e.g., 18mm-55mm or 24mm-70mm), or a standard 50mm.
You don’t need a macro lens for this course, but I will be discussing macro lenses as an option for those interested.
I’ve done some close-up & macro photography. Is there really anything else I can learn?
Most of us have dabbled in close-up & macro photos. This course is designed to go beyond the basics and cover all aspects of macro.
This includes all major lens manipulation and augmenting techniques, gear choice, lighting techniques specifically for close-up & macro, background considerations, DOF considerations, and a host of other important topics and skillsets. There’s a lot you can learn in this course.
What can I do with my new skills in close-up & macro photography?
So much! For one, you’ll be confidently and creatively producing beautiful images from everyday objects, nature, food, and interesting pieces you find. Create unique wall art (object or abstract).
And we all like to show off our amazing images online and in our portfolios! Do you have an online shop that could benefit from displaying close-up and extreme close-up details of your products? Are you a collector, hobbyist, or tutorial creator who would like to display details of objects for illustration?
There really is no end to what you can (and will) use your new close-up & macro skills for. Get the skills, and a whole world of possibilities will open up for you.
Will you teach me special lighting techniques?
Yes. You’ll learn techniques using natural and household lighting, as well as simple on- and off-camera flash techniques. You can even try out some special lighting effects using modifiers and gels! We’re going to have a lot of fun with lighting. And what you learn will help with other types of lighting projects you might encounter later.
Do I have to complete the quizzes and project assignments?
No. The quizzes and project assignments are optional. The project assignments can be useful if you would like instructor or peer feedback in the photography group. And the quizzes can help you self-assess your knowledge of the material in a set of lessons.
Can I take this course at my own pace?
Absolutely. Although the course is presented as five weekly sections, you can zip through the whole course as fast as you like, or you can take as long as you need to complete the course.
Here’s what people said about the book I wrote that inspired this course:
“A Recipe for Success”
Like the other Ed Verosky eBooks I’ve had the pleasure of reviewing, Introduction to Close-Up & Macro Photography, is a thoughtful, accessible document that moves along at a pace brisk enough to keep the reader engaged and presents a wealth of information that doesn’t overload or distract from the learning process. While this book may be primarily aimed at beginner macro photographers, it is hardly facile; seasoned macro shooters might also find value in these pages. Introduction to Close-Up & Macro Photography is, in short, a recipe for success.

“An Excellent Guide”
Ed Verosky’s book is an excellent guide to macro photography! I appreciate that he includes options for every budget and discusses the pros and cons of each. I cannot wait to try his technique, especially photographing water droplets!

“Covers All The Basics”
I have been a keen close-up photographer ever since I bought my extension tubes and I have taught myself to use what I have to make some great images. I wish this book was available when I started. It covers all the basics to get you on the road to producing some wonderful results whatever you wish to photograph in a close-up fashion. I am always surprised to find out things in Ed’s books that I didn’t know. This excellent Introduction to Close-Up and Macro Photography has done it again.
