Three-Point Lighting

Assignment: Three-Point Lighting

In this assignment, you’ll build a complete three-point lighting setup—one light at a time—and fine-tune each one based on your own creative judgment.

Start with your key light, then add fill, and finally the kicker or rim light. The goal here isn’t to chase perfect ratios or use a light meter—it’s to train your eye. Observe what each light is doing, adjust for the look you want, and take notes as you go.

You’ll wrap up with a quick comparison: one shot with all three lights, and another with the kicker turned off. Study the difference, and decide which version you prefer. Be sure to download the assignment handout for full instructions and submission guidelines.
